How to Use Dxtory to Record Games

In the realm of game capturing programs, Dxtory is one of the most powerful applications. It features an incredible number of configuration options and is one of the few programs that easily supports recordings of up to 120FPS.

However, it can also be a very confusing piece of software. Once you are used to it, you can see how everything falls into place and it becomes much simpler to use. But for novice users, the interface and its many options can be very intimidating.

Here, we will take a look at how you can use Dxtory to record your games in a simple and user-friendly manner.

Record games with Dxtory

Note: Dxtory's free version is limited to recordings of 30 seconds. If you want to record unlimited sessions, then you will need to purchase a license.

Setting things up

As you have probably understood already, the magic of Dxtory lies in its configuration options. Finding out where everything is and in what order you have to configure them can certainly be confusing, so follow the steps below.

    • Run your game

This is the first thing you will want to do. Dxtory will automatically recognize games running in the background so you should launch the game you are planning to record immediately.

To view running games in Dxtory, you have to go to the Target tab, located on the far-left of the toolbar.

    • Choose a save location

Now, you will want to select a location to save your recordings. This will save you the hassle of later trying to figure out where they are.

To do this, just go to the Folder tab, click on the Plus icon, and select a location in your computer.

    • Run the benchmark

While still in the folder tab, click on the benchmark button, located next to the location where your videos are saved.

This will let you see how fast your hard drive can run. You will surely need a good SSD for fast recordings so keep that in mind.

    • Set up the hotkeys

Go to the Hotkeys tab There are 8 different options here, but you only really need to set up the first one, which is the key you will use to start and end the recording.

Just click on that space and then press the desired key.

    • Change the video settings

In the next tab, the Movie settings, you will be able to configure exactly what your video output will be like. You can change video codecs, frame rate, quality, and the file format (just choose AVI).

Don't be intimidated by the number of options here, just change what you are comfortable with.

    • Set up your audio

The Audio tab will give you the option of setting up two different channels, usually one for music/gameplay audio and your microphone.

Make sure to select the right devices here, though this should be relatively easy unless you have a bunch of different audio devices connected to your PC.

    • A note on the advanced settings

The Advanced tab is exactly that, meant for advanced users. Do not mess with anything here unless you actually know what each option is.

Recording your gameplay

Now that you have (hopefully) set up everything, you are ready to start recording. To start with, you can minimize Dxtory and just head over to the game you want to capture.

You will notice an FPS counter, but this will not be included in the recording, unless you choose to do that in the Movie Settings tab.

To start recording, you just press the hotkey you set up before. When you start recording, you will see 2 FPS counters: the one on the left is the FPS your game is running at, and the FPS on the right is what you are recording in.

To finish the recording, just press on the hotkey again.

Recommended Alternative – DemoCreator

Dxtory can be a powerful application but it's far from perfect:

  • Not user-friendly
  • Can only record games, not desktop.
  • No video editing options.

If you are looking for an alternative that can cover all of those areas without having to learn a complex interface again, DemoCreator is perfect for you:

  • It's easy to set up and use.
  • It can record up to 120FPS as well.
  • It easily allows you to record dual devices.
  • It has an integrated, easy-to-use video editor.
